Betty D. Brown, 1927 - 2011
and Sue Brown Chapin

Betty D. Brown was a self-taught artist who was "born with a paint brush in her hand." After retiring as the Carlton, Minnesota Postmaster in 1987, Betty was able to begin painting full-time. She opened her own Studio-Gallery in Carlton in 1992. She studied in workshops with many watercolorists, including Cheng Khee-Chee, Tom Lynch and Zoltan Szabo. During her lifetime she was a member of Artists of Minnesota, and her dozens of awards include “Artist of the Year” in 1996, “Best of Show” in 2001, and a 1st Place Blue Ribbon for her painting “Creative Threads” in 2008. Betty was also a member of the Lake Superior Watercolor Society and was a founding member of the Arrowhead Art Club.

In March of 2006, after decades of watching her mom paint, Sue decided to give it a try. With her first paint stroke “there was no turning back!”. She is a member of Artists of Minnesota, winning two awards in 2007, a 1st Place Blue Ribbon for her painting “Blue Danube” in 2008, and a Members Choice award in 2011. Sue is also a member of the Lake Superior Watercolor Society and of the Arrowhead Art Club, and teaches a number of watercolor classes.
